Flavored coffee isn’t my favorite. My sister adores hazelnut coffee. My parents like a good hickory coffee. I got to thinking and there’s got to be some weird coffee flavors out there. Because humans are weird and I’m here for it.
I tried to stay away from some of the obvious flavor pairing with coffee. It’s post-2022, maple pecan isn’t that groundbreaking these days.
In this post, I’m going to talk about 10 weird flavored coffees and why you should try them. I have picked something for just about everyone.
Do you like bacon?
Check.
Do you love peanut butter?
I’ve got you covered.
How about something more floral?
Of course, I’ve picked something just for you.
Let’s get weird and explore my 10 best picks for weird coffee flavors.
1 – Bones Coffee Company – Electric Unicorn
We are starting with 1 of 3 unique flavored coffees from Bones Coffee Company. Electric Unicorn is as silly as its name sounds. This fruity cereal milk flavored coffee definitely qualifies as a weird coffee flavor.
I suggest buying this in the whole bean format as I couldn’t imagine this being your regular everyday brew. If it is, live a little and get the preground bag. Otherwise, whole bean will be the way to preserve the freshness of this wacky flavored coffee.
Bones Coffee Company pretty much has the weird flavored coffee market cornered with their wide variety of quirky flavored coffees. Not only are the flavors bizarre, but they are also expertly roasted in their roastery with 100% arabica beans that seem to be ethically sourced. I couldn’t find any certification on their website, but it seems to be a priority for the company.
Where this coffee shines is that its small batch roasted. What gives this roasting approach advantage is that you’re not going to end up with crappy, stale coffee that’s covered up with a bunch of artificial flavors. Small catch roasting can almost guarantee constantly fresh beans.
You can buy a bag of Bones Coffee Company Electric Unicorn in whole beans or ground on Amazon with free shipping for Prime members,
2 – Wake the Hell Up! – Peanut Butter Cup
Remember our post about Death Wish Coffee? Let me introduce you to Wake the Hell Up! Coffee and their peanut butter flavored coffee. This ultra caffeinated coffee is your sweet tooth’s answer to those sleepy mornings.
The coffee is roasted in small batches by Utica Coffee Roasting. They’re located in Utica, New York, and have been in business since 2002. The company prides itself in its community based revitalization projects and hiring local staff.
The company claims their coffee has 50% more caffeine than your average house blend coffee. Who doesn’t want that extra jolt of caffeine and a peanut butter cup all in one coffee?
The coffee has over 2,200 4.5 star reviews on Amazon. The biggest selling point (besides the creamy peanut butter flavor) is that the ultra caffeinated brew doesn’t have a bitter taste or give drinkers the coffee jitters.
Much like most of the weird flavored coffees on this list, the beans are slow roasted in small batches by hand. You can buy a bag of Wake the Hell Up! Peanut Butter Cup on Amazon.
3 – Conecto Coffee – Cardamom
Conecto Coffee has a weird flavored coffee that I’m excited to try. Its cardamom
. If you’re a fan of Middle Eastern, Indian, or even Swedish sweets, then you’re familiar with its unique flavor.
The company roasts their Guatemalan beans to a medium roast and adds in ground cardamom that’s been clay pot roasted. This coffee results in a low acid coffee with the herbaceous, lemony finish that the added cardamom brings.
Connecto has direct relations with their small farmers in the mountains of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, for sourcing all their 100% arabica beans. They hand pack and roast all their coffee to ensure the freshness of their beans.
Every bag of Connecto Coffee sold benefits the company’s family run 501(c)(3) non-profit, Puente. Puente’s mission is to end childhood malnutrition in Guatemala. If you’re a fan of cardamom and a feel good cup of killer coffee, then this is the weird flavor coffee for you.
You can buy your own bag of Connecto Coffee on Amazon. I would suggest having it with a bit of honey and some steamed oat milk to bring out the nuances of the cardamom’s flavors.
4 – Bones Coffee Company – Maple Bacon
This is Bones’ 2nd appearance of Bones on this list, and for a good reason. Bones’ specialty is good coffee with quirky flavors. Their maple bacon flavor is pretty good. It has the smokey umami flavor of bacon with the natural sweetness of maple syrup.
Like their other coffees, this is a medium roast of 100% arabica beans that comes in whole or ground options. I would save this for a get together with friends. Maybe a Christmas morning brunch with homemade cinnamon buns.
As always, this coffee is vega, sugar-free, and keto-friendly. I keep this one on hand for those special occasions. It also makes a killer ingredient to a pork rub to9o. Try it; I think you’ll love it.
You can buy a bag of Bones Coffee maple bacon flavored beans on Amazon in ground or whole bean. This could be interesting as cold brew o iced in the summertime with BBQ.
5 – Christopher Bean Coffee – Bananas Foster
A friend suggested this coffee. It’s their favorite flavored coffee, and I think it’s weird. This is probably because I’m not a fan of bananas. But if you’re a fan of bananas, I suggest trying Christopher Bean Coffee’s bananas foster flavored coffee.
Everyone I know that’s tried this coffee can’t get enough. Apparently, bananas foster and coffee are a match made in heaven. I guess it makes sense because of the caramel flavors found in this classic dessert. Coffee and caramel are a classic flavor pairing.
If you want to try a cup or 2 of bananas foster flavored coffee, you can buy a bag of Christopher Bean Coffee bananas foster on Amazon.
6 – Via Bom Dia – Chipotle Cacao Chocolate
I adore chipotle and chocolate. The idea of sweet and spicy does it for me. When I had Via Bom Dia’s chipotle cacao chocolate coffee for the first time, it was a gift from my now husband when we first started dating. He knew I loved coffee and spicy food. We’re married now, so I guess it worked.
Via Bom Dia roasts their medium roast coffee in small batches in New York City and packages every bag by hand. All of their coffee uses 100% arabica beans with authentic spices. This flavor uses coffee, chipotle peppers, cinnamon, and cacao nibs.
Via Bom Dia means via good morning in Spanish. This coffee will help you have a good morning with warming, spicy, and expertly roasted coffee. It’s excellent in a pour over application with frothed coconut milk. This combination plays well together on those chilly winter morning commutes we all dread.
You can buy a bag of this chocolate, spicy but smoky coffee on Amazon. While you’re there, please take a look at the rest of their flavors too. The dirty chai is one of my favorites too.
7 – New Mexico Piñon Coffee
New Mexico Piñon Coffee sounds like a weird flavored coffee if you’ve never had it. Piñon is the native mountain pine tree found in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. I had never heard of this coffee (or the tree) until I moved to Colorado in my early 20s. Everything in Colorado is New Mexico adjacent, if you will.
The company uses small farmer grown, single origin, arabica beans. Once the beans are medium roasted, they are blended with the subtle piñon nut to give this coffee a piney, earthy flavor that has a smooth mouthfeel. The unique flavor is something you won’t find in another coffee. I enjoy this coffee when I’m camping because of the earthy quality of the flavors.
I like this coffee because the flavor seems on par with coffee’s natural flavors without overpowering the beans. You can buy a 12 oz. bag of New Mexico Piñon Coffee on Amazon in whole bean or preground.
8 – Community Coffee – Mardi Gras King Cake
I’ve talked about Community Coffee multiple times before. It’s part of my family’s coffee traditions. Being from Texas, our next door neighbor is Lousiana. In Louisiana, they have this little party called Mardi Gras.
Have you heard of it?
Of course, you have. King cake is the official dessert of Mardis Gras. It’s a large yellow cake with notes of cinnamon and vanilla with A LOT of sugar.
The most unique ingredient in the cake is the little plastic baby (yes, a plastic baby) baked into the cake. Whoever gets the slice with the baby will be the king or queen for the night. The baby represents luck and prosperity.
It sounds weird, but just like everything in Louisana and Mardi Gras, it’s weird, but I don’t question it because it will be the best.
Community Coffee is based in Louisana and has a limited edition of their Mardi Gras King Cake flavored coffee. The flavors aren’t bizarre (vanilla, sugar, and cinnamon), but the reasoning behind the flavor is unique and IYKYK.
Since you now know all about king cake, then you can buy your own bag of Community Coffee Mardi Gras King Cake coffee on Amazon and have it in time for your own Mardi Gras celebration. You’ll have to supply your own king cake; there’s no plastic baby in the coffee.
9 – Bones Coffee Company – Peanut Butter and Jelly
Bones is back with the 3rd installment of their flavored coffee in this post. This time it’s peanut butter and jelly. Just think about it, creamy peanut butter, sweet grape jelly, and coffee. It’s like your childhood and your adult responsibilities wrapped into one cup of weirdly flavored coffee.
You already know about Bones Coffee Company. All of their coffees are medium roast, 100% arabica beans that play well with their weird and wacky flavor combinations. I’m not a fan of really sweet flavored coffees, but a lovely frothed creamer with this coffee hits the spot for me when I’m dragging in the afternoons and want to treat myself. It’s self-care.
You can buy a bag of Bones Coffee Company peanut butter, and jelly flavored coffee on Amazon.
10 – Farmer’s Coffee Co. – Lavender Honey
I saved one fo favorite flavored coffees for lat. This lavender and honey flavored coffee might not seem that unique, but it’s something I crave. I was lucky enough to visit the actual Farmer’s Coffee Co a couple of summers ago.
The company owns a lavender farm in Rockwall, Texas. It’s a little over an hour’s drive from my house. I was, of course, drawn to their lavender flavored coffees. I enjoyed a honey lavender latte my local coffee shop makes in the summer, so I thought, why not?
The medium roast coffee plays well with the earthy honey and the crisp floral notes of the lavender. They have a vanilla and lavender flavor, but the honey and lavender is the flavor that put them on this list.
I enjoy this as a cold brew or iced coffee with shaken coconut milk in the summer. It’s so comforting and refreshing all at the same time. Once you try this coffee, you’re going to know exactly what I’m talking about.
You can buy a 12 oz bag on Amazon. It’s a bit spendier than most of the coffees on this list, but it’s so worth it.
Conclusion
I hope you have some new flavored coffees to try in the near future after reading this post. It has been really enjoyable sharing these with you.
I covered a lot of flavors. Could you even imagine trying all these in one day?
Oof.
